Star Hero Activity idea
💬On this day, my partner and I brainstormed ideas for what activities the students would be doing for the Star Hero Journey event at Metro. After being stumped for a long time, we decided to use chatGPT to help us brainstorm and activity. After Introducing the standards and Ideas to the AI. The AI-generated a very thorough activity plan.
As an IDET student, and with AI being a popular phenomenon, I would like to make a section of the activity that utilizes AI.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary of Activity
Students will learn about different soil textures and their characteristics that may or may not help plants grow. Students will explore different types of soil texture, including different types of loam with varying percentages of sand, clay, and silt. Students will explore soil textures and then create an art piece using the soil texture of their choice. Students will use Text-to-image AI to help with the brainstorming process. Students will use this AI to generate a plant design they like. They will glue the soil of their choice to a piece of cardstock, and then they will try their best to draw their plant with the art supplies we provide.
Prompt we used to generate AI-designed activity.
Using These standards
Tech Apps TEKS
3-5.1.A Create original products using a variety of resources;
Gardening Topic
Explore the texture of a variety of provided soils, then have students participate in a fun arts-based activity about soil texture.
Gardening TEKS Content
Exploring texture in the garden(properties of soils & abilities to support plant growth)
Art TEK 3b.2(c)
Produce drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures, including modeled forms and other art forms such as ceramics, fiber art, constructions, mixed media, installation art, digital art, media, and photographic imagery using a variety of materials.
To create an art activity for 3rd graders that integrates the ideas of soil texture and how it affects plant growth.
What the AI Generated
Creating an art activity for 3rd graders that integrates the concepts of soil texture and its impact on plant growth can be a fun and educational experience. Here's a step-by-step plan for an art activity:
Activity Title: Soil Texture Art Exploration
**Objective:**
- To explore and understand the texture of different types of soil.
- To express knowledge of soil properties and their effect on plant growth through an art-based project.
**Materials Needed:**
- Various types of soil (sand, clay, loam, etc.)
- Magnifying glasses
- Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper, glue, small rocks, sand, etc.)
- Large sheets of paper or poster board
- Plant illustrations or pictures
- Glue, scissors, and containers for soil samples
**Activity Steps:**
**1. Introduction to Soil (15 minutes):**
- Begin by discussing the importance of soil in gardening and plant growth.
- Show students the different soil samples and briefly explain the properties of each (e.g., texture, water-holding capacity).
- Encourage them to observe and feel the different soil types using magnifying glasses.
**2. Soil Exploration (30 minutes):**
- Divide the students into small groups.
- Provide each group with a set of soil samples in containers.
- Instruct them to explore the texture, color, and other characteristics of each soil type.
- Have the students discuss which soil type they think would be best for growing different types of plants.
**3. Art-Based Project (45 minutes):**
- Ask students to choose a specific plant or flower they want to represent in their artwork.
- Provide them with plant illustrations or pictures for reference.
- Instruct the students to create an artwork that depicts their chosen plant and the soil it thrives in.
- They can use various art supplies and incorporate actual soil samples into their artwork to represent soil texture. For example, they can glue sand for sandy soil and clay for clayey soil.
- Encourage creativity in representing soil texture, color, and plant growth.
**4. Presentation (15 minutes):**
- Have each student or group present their artwork to the class.
- Ask them to explain why they chose a particular plant, the soil type they used in their artwork, and how soil texture affects plant growth.
**5. Discussion (15 minutes):**
- Lead a class discussion about the relationship between soil texture and plant growth.
- Encourage students to share their observations and insights from the activity.
**6. Reflection (10 minutes):**
- Conclude the activity by asking students to reflect on what they've learned about soil texture and its impact on gardening and plant growth.
This art activity integrates the TEKS standards for creating original products and exploring soil properties while fostering students' understanding of gardening concepts. It encourages creativity, observation skills, and the ability to connect scientific concepts with art.
💬I like how manageable the prompting is for AI. We did not have enough time to make each section of the activity 15+ minutes so I edited the lesson plan. AI is something that I will continue to use whenever I can. It really helps remove the nitty gritty and allows its users to focus on the design and content they wish to get across to students. I think AI is especially useful for those who struggle to create ideas quickly. Ai allows you to create work-based ideas or images you wish to achieve so that you can spend more time refining my work.
